May is Foster Care Awareness Month

COLUMBIA, S.C. — May is Foster Care Awareness Month which is to shine a light on the importance of creating a child welfare system that engages and supports young people.

For Lee Patterson and her husband fostering children is not just a choice but it’s a calling.

Over the past five years, she has opened her heart and home to 14 children providing stability and love during their most vulnerable moments.

Patterson says she acknowledges the flaws and challenges of the foster system in South Carolina but is urging the community, local and state leaders to keep fighting to make a difference.

ABC Columbia’s Miya Payton spoke with Patterson to share her story.
