Weekend malfunction in system cause sirens to alarm in Newberry County

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– If you heard sirens over the weekend in Newberry County, deputies say there was no cause for alarm, and it was just a malfunction with their system.

There was one in the consolidated section and another in the City of Newberry.

Newberry County Sheriff’s Office deputies say the sirens were not set off from the 911 center or the back up system.

Technicians are investigating and believe it may be a result of geomagnetic storms on the sun which were predicted to interrupt some satellite and radio communications.

Deputies say in the event of an actual emergency, the warning sirens would also coincide with alerts on the phone.
