SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO)– Sumter Police say a mom has been charged after a toddler was found wandering on the streets this morning.
24-year-old Emmani Kiana Wells was taken into custody and charged after a child was spotted by a passerby crossing the road on North Main Street.
Officers received a call about the child after 5 a.m. and began knocking on doors in the area before finding the 2-year-olds’ home and mother, says SPD.
A report says the mom who was upstairs at the home, left the child downstairs to watched by a friend at the time when the child left the home undetected.
The state Department of Social Services (DSS) was notified and the child was placed with family members.
Wells is being charged with unlawful conduct toward a child. She was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center.
Law enforcement is continuing to investigate.
