LEXINGTON, S.C. (WOLO)– A van driver has been charged in the fatal collision involving a Lexington school bus and a motorcycle that occurred Monday morning, says Lexington Police.

Lexington Police responded to a report of collision around 7:14 a.m. in the 100 block of Industrial Drive that involved a van, a motorcycle and a Lexington County School District One school bus that had stopped to pick up students.

During the investigation, law enforcement found that when the bus slowed down to a stop, a motorcycle behind the bus also stopped but a van driver behind both, hit the person on the motorcycle.

When the van driver collided with the motorcycle, the impact sent the person into the back of the bus and pushed the motorcycle a distance away from the scene.

Then the van collided into the back of the school bus and pinned the motorcycle driver between the van and the bus.

The motorcycle driver was pronounced dead at the scene. One student on the school bus was injured and treated for a cut on his arm.

The driver of the van was taken by EMS to a hospital for minor injuries. Officers say the investigation determined that the van driver was at fault for the collision.

20-year-old Giovanni Mendoza Jimenez has been charged with driving without a driver’s license and additional charges are pending.

He is currently being held at the Lexington County Detention Center.
