Becky Hill, the Colleton County clerk of court during Alex Murdaugh’s double murder trial, is scheduled to appear before the State Ethics Commission over allegations that she used her position for financial gain.

The hearing is scheduled for Dec. 19 at 9:30 a.m. at the State Ethics Commission Hearing Room in Columbia. Hill is facing 76 counts of misconduct, all of which are connected to improperly seeking financial gain, according to hearing notices.

Of the 76 counts against Hill, according to the notices, 72 allege she used her official position for financial gain, two allege she used her official position for financial gain for a business she was associated with, and two allege she used or disclosed confidential information for financial gain.

The notices were served to Hill on May 17 following a June 2023 complaint to the ethics commission. The complaint alleges Hill used her position and taxpayer’s money outside of the scope of court business during Murdaugh’s trial.

As alleged in the complaint, Hill used her political position and authority to obtain confidential information and digital images of Murdaugh and others during the trial. It says she was responsible for releasing unredacted body camera footage that appeared on Netflix and acknowledged online that she had a book detailing interactions with those involved in the trial.
