Mother, son charged after law enforcement attempted to serve felony warrant in Prosperity, says NCSO

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Two people have been charged after law enforcement attempted to serve a felony warrant in Prosperity this week, says NCSO.

According to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, investigators obtained burglary warrants for 37-year-old James Robert Peterson in connection with a burglary on Blacks Gate East Road on Friday, May 24.

Deputies say they received information that Peterson was hiding in his mother’s home on Gravel Road near Lake Murray in Prosperity.

Also, they say the sheriff’s office made several attempts to locate him at the home but were told by his mother that he was not at the home.

Later, investigators were able to find evidence that showed he was at the home.

A team of SLED agents, including a K9, and deputies went to the home to attempt to serve the warrant.

Peterson’s mother, 61-year-old Scarlett Boyd told deputies she had not seen Peterson in a while.

However, a Newberry County Sheriff’s Deputy saw Peterson moving through the house from a window.

The K9, the handler, and a deputy sheriff entered the home and confronted Peterson in the hallway of the home when he produced a firearm, shot the dog, then pointed the gun at the warrant team.

During the exchange, law enforcement returned fire and disabled Peterson. K9, Coba, who was shot was rushed to an emergency veterinarian, but died due to his wounds.

Peterson was taken to an area trauma center and is currently undergoing treatment for his wounds.

He is currently being charged for the burglary.

And his mother, Scarlett Boyd has been charged with hindering a law enforcement officer serving process and is in the Newberry County Detention Center under a $20,000 cash/surety bond.

Per protocols of both SLED and the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, an outside agency was called in to perform the investigation of the officer involved shooting and the murder of Coba.

Therefore, Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon was contacted and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation.
