Irmo Police hosting catalytic converter event
IRMO, S.C. (WOLO)– Irmo Police Department’s Community Services Division will be hosting a theft prevention event, says the department.
The community event will be held at the AAA Car Care Center on Lake Murray Boulevard this Saturday, June 15, at 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Irmo PD says catalytic converter kits will be given out free of charge and installed on-site.
According to the NICB (National Insurance Crime Bureau), the USA experienced more than 64,000 catalytic converter thefts in 2022.
Catalytic converters are made up of precious metals such as rhodium, platinum and palladium which makes them highly valuable and the metals can be recycled and resold.
Officers say permanently marking your catalytic converter helps deter theft, makes it easier for law enforcement to track and identify your converter if stolen and should deter scrap metal buyers from purchasing it without proof of vehicle ownership. To sign up for the event, click here.
