Online passports renewals being tested

(CNN)– It may soon be a lot easier to renew your passport. The U.S. State Department has begun testing an updated system for online passport renewals.

The program will accept a small amount of online applications each day for the first few months to address any issues and then gradually ramp-up operations.

The goal is to have two-thirds of passport renewals completed online once the program is fully up-and-running. You’ll still have to wait to actually receive your passport in the mail.

Also, expedited or urgent travel passport services are not available for those renewing online.
