SCHP: 1 dead after evading Richland County deputies

Richland Co., SC (WOLO) — The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash that took place just after 2:30 Friday afternoon. According to Master Trooper William Bennett with SCHP,  the driver of a 2009 Ford Fusion was heading east along Colonial Drive while trying to evade police around 2 miles north of the City of Columbia.

Officials say during the chase, the unidentified driver ran off the left side of the road at the intersection Hurst Drive and hit a tree. The driver was transported to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital where investigators say the person later died.

The accident remains under investigation.
