National parks offer free entry on Juneteenth

(CNN)– The National Park Service is waiving entry fees at all national parks on Wednesday in honor of Juneteenth.

This year is the first time there will be free entry day at U.S. national parks, though fees will remain in effect for parking and activities like camping and fishing.

Also, parks operated in partnerships with outside parties may charge other fees.

Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in 2021.

It celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S. and it was on that date in1865 that the last enslaved peoples in Texas were finally freed.
