RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Richland County School District One is seeking volunteers for its R1 CHAMPS (Caring Hearts Making Positive Shifts) program.

According to district officials, the program is looking for positive role models to volunteer their time to serve Richland One school.

R1 CHAMPS was launched in 2023 with the goal of placing positive role models on school campuses and help staff empower, inspire and encourage students to achieve their full potential.

Volunteers provide an extra set of eyes and more additional adult presences on campuses in the district during school days.

Three training sessions will be held in July at the Lyon Street Student Services Center (1310 Lyon Street, Columbia, SC 29204).

  •  Tuesday, July 9 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, July 16 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, July 23 at 1 p.m.

Anyone interested in becoming an R1 CHAMPS volunteer and plan to attend one of the training sessions can contact Kerry Abel, Richland One’s coordinator of dropout prevention and
mentoring services, at 803-231-7182 or kerry.abel@richlandone.org.
