City of Orangeburg breaks ground on new Railroad Corner revitalization project

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WOLO)– A former hub for business in Orangeburg may soon be returning to its former glory.

On Wednesday, June 19, the City of Orangeburg broke ground on a new project which will revitalize Railroad Corner.

The more than $20 million improvement will create office and commercial space as well as student housing for Claflin and South Carolina State University, and a civil rights museum.

There will also be improvements to parking and transit infrastructure as well as a pedestrian bridge.

The project aims to not only improve Railroad Corner but also connect Orangeburg’s Downtown Business District to the city’s 2 HBCUs.

SC State President Alexander Conyers believes this revitalization can help attract more students to Orangeburg.

Construction is expected to finish up in late Summer or early Fall of 2025.
