Former Marion Co. Deputy charged with assault & battery, misconduct in office
Columbia, SC (WOLO) — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is charging a former Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy after he is accused of beating up an arrestee whom was taken into custody for public intoxication. According to arrest warrants obtained by ABC Columbia News, in April of 2024, Kyle Kelly was escorting the suspect into the Marion County Detention Center when officials say the man tried to pull away from him.
According to the warrant, Kelly is accused of grabbing the man by the throat, pushing him up against a wall, and kicking him in the groin before the affidavit says he punched him in the face twice while the arrestee was handcuffed behind his back. Kelly has been charged with Assault and Battery in the 3rd degree, and Misconduct in Office.
The case will be prosecuted by the 12th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
