RICHLAND CO., S.C. (WOLO) – Richland County Council will hold a public hearing on a proposed Transportation Penny referendum during a special called Transportation Improvement meeting tomorrow.

It starts at 6 p.m. at their building on 2020 Hampton Street.

Officials say this will be the final opportunity for County residents to be heard on the potential implementation of a new Transportation Penny program before Council’s final vote on Tuesday, July 16.

According to the Richland County Council, the referendum must pass three readings before it can be included as part of the November General Election ballot.

In 2012, Richland County residents voted to approve the 1% sales tax to fund much needed projects.

“We understand the significance of the proposed new Transportation Penny program for our community’s future,” said Richland County Council Chair Jesica Mackey.

“The upcoming public hearing is an essential opportunity for County residents to be heard and have a voice in shaping the transportation infrastructure that will impact our daily lives. We encourage all residents to participate and share their valuable input to help us make informed decisions that serve the best interests of our community.”

Residents who cannot attend the July 9 public hearing but want to have their voices heard may email comments to rccoco@richlandcountysc.gov to be included in the record.

The deadline to submit written comments is today at 5 p.m.
