SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A man has been arrested in connection with 2-year-old Sumter County murder case, says Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis.

Sheriff Dennis says investigators made a breakthrough this week into the murder case of Stephen Collins.

Collins was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds when deputies responded to a call on Edgehill Road on July 8, 2022.

It is alleged that between July 7, 2022, and July 8, 2022, Elijah Keith Fleming and another person entered a door at the home of Stephen Collins while armed with a firearm with the intent to steal items from within the home, says Sumter County investigators.

Once the individuals were inside the home, investigators believe Fleming and an accomplice shot Collins several times while he was sitting on his couch.

With forensic evidence gathered at the scene and Fleming’s statement implicating himself, he was charged with murder and first-degree burglary, according to a press release.

Fleming is being held on murder and aggravated assault charges at the Clayton County Jail in Clayton County, Georgia.

His extradition to Sumter County is pending the resolution of his charges in Clayton County.

“I hope this will begin to bring some comfort and a sense of closure to Mr. Collins’ family and friends,” remarks Sheriff Dennis.

The investigation into the murder of Stephen Collins is still ongoing.
