Jobless claims back to 2024 high

(CNN)– First time applicants for employment benefits bounced back up to a 2024 high.

The federal government reports, initial jobless claims last week matched their highest level of the year with an estimated 243 thousand.

That’s about 20 thousand more from the prior week’s total.

Initial claims are considered a proxy for layoffs.

Thursday’s data also showed the number of continuing claims or applications from people who have filed for unemployment for at least one week was nearly 1.9 million.
