RICHLAND CO., S.C. (WOLO) – Sheriff Leon Lott says a suspect wanted for trying to kill an officer in Georgia, has been apprehended in Richland County.

Deputies say Julio Figueroa, 39, attempted to shoot a Cobb County police officer on Tuesday and they were notified he fled from police and may be in Richland County.

On Wednesday, investigators confirmed that Figueroa had taken a Greyhound bus to Richland County and was staying with a family member on Summer Court in the Carriage Oaks subdivision.

According to authorities, when they arrived at the home after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, a female family member and her two young children emerged from the front door and were taken to safety, while Figueroa barricaded himself inside for approximately two hours.

Deputies say at approximately 5 p.m., due to Figueroa’s refusal to cooperate, they utilized chemical munitions to affect compliance. Figueroa did eventually surrender and was taken into custody without incident.

He was first taken to a hospital to be medically cleared.

He’s currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center where he’s awaiting extradition.

Figueroa is wanted on several charges in Cobb County, including aggravated assault of an officer with a weapon, first degree burglary, among others.
