Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center investigates 2 suspicious deaths in as many days
Richland Co., SC (WOLO) — The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of an inmate they say was found dead in the jail Tuesday afternoon.
According to authorities, a detainee was found unresponsive in one of the open housing units just before 1:30 pm. Staff at the facility reported last seeing the man active a little more than 2 hours earlier at around 11 am Tuesday morning.
Detention center medical staff went to check on the inmate as soon as they learned of his condition and started life saving measures immediately but were unable to save him. Authorities tell us leadership at the detention center promptly placed the facility on lockdown and called the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and Coroner’s Office in to assist.
This is the second inmate found unresponsive at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in as many days. Monday July 22, ASGDC staff say they discovered another male detainee unresponsive inside of his cell at 11:15 am. The on site medical team conducted life saving measures in an attempt to revive the inmate but say they were unsuccessful. This inmate did not have a cellmate at the time he was discovered.
ASGDC says they are conducting an internal investigation to quickly determine any potential sources contributing to recent incidents.
