BIRDIES WITH BEAMER: USC coach talks golf and upcoming season at annual event

BLYTHEWOOD, SC (WOLO) — With the college football season around the corner, it may be the last time Coach Shane Beamer gets on the golf course for the year.

Wednesday, Beamer hit the links in Blythewood at the Cobblestone Park Golf Club.

Since 2011, the University of South Carolina football coach has spoken about the upcoming season at a golf tournament, Birdies With Beamer.

“USC athletics reached out to me four years back and asked if we were interested in hosting the Birdies With Beamer event,” said Michael Burroughs with Cobblestone Park Golf Club. “It’s been a slam dunk for us. The whole club gets excited for this event.”

Cobblestone Park Golf Course in Blythewood is one that Coach Beamer is familiar with.

“It’s memories coming up here because I played here every single morning when I worked for Steve Spurrier,” coach said. “When I worked at Carolina, I feel like we were at Cobblestone every morning at 8:30.”

Thursday, Beamer may have enjoyed time on the green, but he’s back on the gridiron tomorrow.

“We have a camp tomorrow. We will be right back at it,” Beamer said. “There’s a lot of high school prospects coming in that we’ll be working with. Our associate athletic director told us there is close to 300 young men here tomorrow for camp which is huge.”

It’s a huge season ahead for the Gamecocks football team, but even with what has been called a tough schedule, coach is optimistic.

“I’m certainly confident. I don’t think you are ever comfortable. You have to be uncomfortable to be able to grow. I don’t want to ever get comfortable but I’m confident,” Beamer said. “Going into year four, I’ve never been more excited about practice starting next week than I am right now. That I know for sure.”

Beamer says Thursday’s event will probably be the last time he’s on a golf course for the rest of the year, but Cobblestone Park’s directors invite any golf enthusiasts to check out the course that they say is one of the best in the Midlands.

“I would say it’s because of the members first and foremost,” Burroughs said. “As far at the golf course, the terrain is very aesthetically pleasing to the eye and a fun course to play.”
