SC governor and other state leaders announce new childcare assistance for military members

DALZELL, SC (WOLO) — According to Military OneSource, more than 33,000 active duty service members live in South Carolina.

Many face difficulties in finding reliable and affordable childcare in their communities.

Thursday afternoon, Governor Henry McMaster joined other state leaders in announcing the Military Child Care in Your Neighborhood Plus program as it is known.

This new program, MCCYN Plus, helps provide assistance to military families thanks to a partnership between the Department of Defense and the South Carolina Department of Social Services.

In addition to financial aid, DSS helps families find reliable childcare through its ABC Quality tool which rates childcare programs.

The state’s secretary of veterans affairs says this tool is crucial for service members.

Colonel Kevin Hicok at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter has had to find childcare for his own children.

South Carolina is now one of 15 states to offer a military family child care assistance program.
