Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center investigating suspected, non-fatal opioid overdose
RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Richland County’s Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center is investigating a suspected, non-fatal opioid overdose, according to the county.
County officials say the detention center’s medical staff was alerted to a code blue in Unit X-Ray at 11:12 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13, when the team found a detainee ill and incoherent.
Medical personnel immediately administered two doses of Narcan, say officials.
The detainee became alert and responsive and was taken to the hospital by Richland County EMS for additional treatment and assessment.
“Richland County is determined to find out the sources that are contributing to the use of drugs at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. This type of illegal activity in the jail will not be tolerated, and we will hold those responsible to the highest extent of the law,” said Leonardo Brown, County administrator.
The detention center is conducting an internal investigation in conjunction with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
