Murdaugh’s attorneys asked the court in July to review former South Carolina Chief Justice Jean Toal’s ruling denying Murdaugh’s motion for a retrial after allegations ofjury tampering by the clerk of court surfaced.Toal denied Murdaugh’s motion for a retrial on Jan. 29, 2024.
Murdaugh is serving two consecutive life sentences for the murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul who were found shot to death at their Moselle estate in Colleton County on June 7, 2021.
Murdaugh’s lawyers, Jim Griffin and Dick Harpootlian, requested a retrial in October of 2023 after accusing Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill of jury tampering.
Becky Hill testified along with jurors from the trial. Hill denied any tampering with the jury.
She resigned from her position as Colleton County Clerk of Court on March 25, 2024. In January of 2023, South Carolina state police announcedthey were investigating the possibility Hill might have abused her government position for financial gain.
