Beamer names LaNorris Sellers as the Gamecocks starting QB
The South Carolina Gamecocks officially have their newest starting quarterback, LaNorris Sellers.
Head football coach Shane Beamer informed the media Tuesday afternoon Sellers earned the spot, after a competition throughout the preseason with transfer quarterback Robby Ashford.
Beamer did not rule out a the chance for Ashford to see action this Fall, but emphasized Sellers is the starter and they won’t be switching quarterbacks every other play.
Coach Beamer said they evaluated the two candidates on everything from preseason stats, to consistency, to gut feel. Ultimately, the staff felt Sellers was right for the job.
“He’s a winner,” Beamer said on Sellers, referencing his success in high school.
Sellers, the 6-foot-3, 242-pound sophomore will lead the Gamecocks in their first game of the season next Saturday against Old Dominion.
