PRESERVING THE PAST: Historic Columbia names new executive director

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Founded in 1786, Columbia has a rich history.

Historic Columbia is a nonprofit organization that works to keep Soda City’s cultural past alive.

It runs five historic house museums in the Robert Mills Historic District but that’s not all the organization does.

Historic Columbia also preserves and researches remnants of Columbia’s background.

Wednesday, the nonprofit announced a new executive director will be taking over next month.

Historic Columbia’s new director Suzanne Brooks previously worked for Habitat for Humanity.

Now, she will oversee five historic home museums in the Robert Mills Historic District.

The sites are open to the public Wednesday through Sunday but Brooks says that Columbia’s history can be found outside of downtown.

Brooks has experience working in this field, serving in leadership roles at Preservation South Carolina and Spartanburg County Historical Association.  She hopes to bring those skills to Soda City.

Brooks will officially start her position on September 30th.
