Hundreds of dead chickens discovered dumped in Edisto River
Wagner, S.C. (WOLO) — Hundreds of dead chickens were found dumped in the North Fork section of the Edisto River just downstream from the bridge on Merrits Drive along the Aiken County Lexington County line. Edisto Riverkeeper Hugo Krispyn, who provided us with video of the site says he stumbled upon the chicken carcasses Tuesday while looking into reports of trash being dumped in the waterway.
According to the Riverkeeper, the dead chickens were seen floating in the area of the North Fork portion of the river. And officials say this is not the first time they have seen illegal dumping, but officials say it’s usually things like old furniture, and occasionally pets.
According to South Carolina law, it is a civil offense to illegally dump items in waterways and could result in a fine, jail time or both. The incident remains under investigation as officials continue trying to determine who unloaded the carcasses.
