Suspect faces up to 30 years in prison

Officials say Vereen was arrested on August 21 in coordination with the Columbia Police Department and The Department of Homeland Security and accused of possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material.

 

Columbia, S.C. (WOLO)– A spokesperson for the SC Attorney General’s Office says Matthew Vereen of Columbia is facing three charges connected to the sexual exploitation of a minor.

Officials say Vereen was arrested on August 21 in coordination with the Columbia Police Department and The Department of Homeland Security and accused of possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material.

Vereen is a sports reporter and weekend anchor for WACH-TV, the Fox affiliate in Columbia.

A statement posted on the station’s website reads, “WACH FOX News understands the severity of these allegations and Vereen has been placed on suspension pending an investigation.

As this is a personnel matter, the station will not be commenting further at this time.”

If convicted, officials say Vereen faces up to 30 years in prison.
