ONE-ON-ONE: Prisma Health doctor explains recent listeria outbreak impacting South Carolina

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — A listeria outbreak has led to Boar’s Head recalling certain deli meats.

The contaminated products are being linked to two deaths in South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

Listeria can survive refrigeration and even freezing.

For most people, the bacteria is not life threatening according to a Prisma Health doctor.

Listeria can also cause flu-like symptoms if it spreads to the bloodstream but there are more serious complications than this that can occur.

Pregnant women, those who are older than 65 years of age or have a weakened immune system are also at higher risk of developing serious illness from the bacteria. However, doctors say it can usually be cured by antibiotics.
