SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A welfare check on a paralyzed victim in Sumter County led to a 24-year-old man’s arrest, said deputies.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said around midnight on Friday, family members requested that they perform a welfare check on a family member in the Wedgefield area.
According to the sheriff’s office, when deputies arrived to the home they found 24-year-old Nathanael Timothy Jackson standing on the porch with no lights on, and the voice of the victim screaming for help inside.
As deputies detained Jackson, family members found the victim bleeding with their hair cut off in the home.
During an investigation, deputies found that Jackson allegedly took victim’s walker and other items they could use to help them escape the home.
Allegedly Jackson destroyed the victim’s phone and their Life Alert button.
Investigators said the victim stated that after being unable to leave or call for help, they were just trying to stay alive.
Jackson was arrested and charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult and kidnapping.
He was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center where he was awaiting a bond hearing.
Sheriff Anthony Dennis thanked the family for remaining in contact with the victim.
“This heartbreaking situation should remind all of us to check on our family members and neighbors who live alone or may be vulnerable. Our Community Watch Neighborhoods try to do this, and I hope everyone will check on their neighbors and call us if they are concerned,” said Sheriff Dennis.
