FCSO: Man charged in connection with July 2023 murder

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A man has been arrested in connection with a July 2023 murder, say Fairfield County deputies.

Marshawn Devon Geiger was formally arrested on August 19, 2024, for the murder of Tyon D. Byrd.

Geiger is currently incarcerated in the South Carolina Department of Corrections for unrelated charges.

Investigators say on July 1, 2023, Tyon Byrd was attending a birthday party at a home on Peach Road in the Greenbrier area of Fairfield County when a firearm went off into a crowd of people.

Byrd was hit by gunfire and died as a result of a gunshot wound.

Two other people at the party were also hit by the gunfire and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Fairfield County investigators say they were able to identify Marshawn D. Geiger as a suspect and charged him in the connection with the shooting.

In addition to the murder charge, Geiger was also charged with 2 counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Law enforcement say he will be brought before a Fairfield County judge at a later date.

“We want to express our deepest sorrow to the families and friends of Tyon Byrd and the two other victims. This was a senseless tragedy and we know that these families have been hurting,” says Sheriff Will Montgomery.
