Bulldogs capture first win during Berry era over The Citadel, 23-20
CHARLESTON, SC—South Carolina State first-year head coach Chennis Berry captured his first win at the helm Saturday (Sept. 7) afternoon in a 23-20 over regional rival The Citadel at Sansom Field at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
Despite a scrappy comeback by The Citadel (1-1, 0-0 SOCON), SC State (1-1, 0-0 MEAC) managed to amass a game-high 421-yards total offense on the day.
KEY NOTES
- Quarterback Eric Phoenix led the air attack throwing 19-of-24 for 204-yards and one touchdown in the win.
- For the second straight week transfer running back Deondra Duehart controlled the ground with 18 carries for 128-yards (7.1 ypc), while Phoenix posted a solid performance rushing as well with 10 rushes for 41-yards (4.1 ypc).
- Out of the 19 catches thrown by Phoenix, senior wide receiver led the way with five (5) catches for 94-yards (long of 37 yards) and Caden High finished with six (6) for 49-yards (long of 21 yards) and a touchdown. Einaj Carter added four (4) catches for 35-yards respectfully.
- Defensively, Daythan Peterson and Jadin Jones finished with a team-high six (6) tackles each. Peterson added a tackle for loss for 8-yards, while defensive end Ashaad Hall posted four (4) solo tackles along with one tackle for loss for 5-yards and one sack.
- The offensive line played lights out for SC State with the offense racking up a game-high 26 first downs and converting 7-of-13 on 3rd downs and 4-of-4 in red zone scores.
NEXT UP: The Bulldogs remain on the road to take on FBS Opponent Georgia Southern on Saturday (Sept. 14) in Statesboro, GA. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN+.
