CPD: Officers make arrest in fatal Bluff Road hit-and-run case, bond denied

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– On Wednesday morning, Oct. 23, the man accused of hitting 22-year-old Xavier Jackson appeared at a bond hearing after being arrested earlier this week.

40-year-old James Gilmore faces charges of hit-and-run as well as failure to give information and render aid.

Local Attorney Seth Rose represented Gilmore and asked a City of Columbia judge for a surety bond for the defendant, saying Gilmore did not pose a danger to the community nor was he a flight risk.

However, the judge disagreed, denying Gilmore bond.

Gilmore’s next court appearance is set for December 13.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Columbia Police officers say there has been an arrest made in connection to a fatal hit-and-run case that happened earlier this month.

Officers arrested 40-year-old James Gilmore in connection with the death of 22-year-old Xavier Jackson after a hit-and-run collision that happened on Monday, Oct. 7.

Gilmore is accused of driving while under suspension and without insurance along the 3400 block of Bluff Road on Oct. 7, and hitting Xavier Jackson.

CPD investigators believe that Jackson was walking eastbound along Bluff Road at the time of the incident.

Richland County Coroner’s Office says Jackson’s body was found on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Additionally, Gilmore is accused of leaving the scene of the crime after hitting Jackson, and not rendering aid to the victim or notifying police about the incident.

Several witnesses reported to investigators that they saw a pick-up truck drive off the roadway and onto the grassy shoulder of Bluff Road.

Columbia PD investigators found key pieces of evidence at the scene which were collected for processing, according to CPD.

The vehicle Gilmore was allegedly driving during the crime, a blue Chevy pick-up truck was located near the crime scene on the same day as the collision.

He was charged with hit-and-run with death and failure to give information and render aid.

Also, he will be housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC).
