Former SC State athlete arrested on DUI, drug charges

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– The Richland County Sheriff’s Department says a former SC State football player has been arrested on DUI, and drug charges.

Former SC State Football Player Jamare Benjamin is being charged with two counts of possession of controlled substance schedule II, transport of alcoholic beverages in motor vehicle with broken seal, DUI 1st, and simple possession of marijuana.

Investigators say just after midnight on Oct. 30, Richland County deputies saw a Chevy sedan speeding and failing to maintain its lane on Bluff Road.

A traffic stop was attempted, deputies say Benjamin threw a paper bag out of the window and then stopped the sedan.

During the stop, the deputy located open liquor containers and narcotics. Deputies say Benjamin was also observed to be under the influence.

He was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
