Columbia, SC (WOLO) — State Treasurer Curtis Loftis wants children to get a lesson in finance and is starting a personal lesson plan to do just that. Loftis say the goal is to introduce the importance of fiscal responsibility to children at an early age through interactive lessons. The lesson is taught from a kit based on a coloring book entitled  Lucky Ducky and the Smart Plan.

Teachers who are able to get the kit will be able to teach students from grades K – 12 goal setting play, financial education, skill development, how to have meaningful discussions about money and the difference between wants versus needs. All of the classroom tutorials will make all of the concepts easy and fun.

Curtis Loftis giving more details about the plan saying ,

“It’s never too early to learn about the importance of saving money and making smart financial choices,” Treasurer Loftis said of the new lesson plan. “That’s why we developed this interactive lesson plan specifically for our elementary teachers. We want to encourage important financial skills at an earlier age and provide the foundational knowledge that can be expanded upon as students go through school.”

The State Treasurer’s Office says the plan is being done in partnership with SC Economics and Future Scholar 529 College Savings Plan which is just one of a number of initiatives that the Treasurer’s Office has put in place to increase individual financial education in the Palmetto state.

Supplies are on a first come first serve basis for the first 100 K-12 teachers. If you are educator here in South Carolina who would like to sign up to implement this lesson plan in their classrooms click the “sign up” link above to get a special kit with needed materials.
