SC Board of Education votes on book bans
Columbia, SC (WOLO) — The South Carolina Board of Education met Tuesday evening in part to consider the fate of two books in public school libraries.
Specifically, a discussion surrounding an 8th grade literature textbook and a novel titled Crank.
Ultimately the board voted to require parental approval for Crank.
The board decided to keep the text book. School Board Officials explained their decision saying the book “does not contain descriptions of sexual content” but does have themes concerning depression, drug use, and sexual assault. Due to the maturenature of the novel board members agreed that the book be accessible only when a student is given parental or guardian approval.
Prior to Tuesday’s meeting the board voted to remove seven books from public school libraries.
