DOT considers cash compensation for flyers

(CNN)– Air travelers could soon be entitled to hundreds of dollars of disputed travel plans.

The Department of Transportation is proposing a new rule that would require airlines to pay cash to passengers who get stranded due to flight disruptions.

Under the proposed rule, airlines would have to pay those passengers at least $200 in cash.

They would also have to provide rebooking at no extra cost and cover expenses like meals and lodging.

The DOT is also weighing a measure that would make airlines pay out even more for longer delays.
