SCDOT opens all lanes of Midlands Connection project

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– All lanes are open to traffic for the 16 miles of widening on I-26 for the Midlands Connection Project, announced SCDOT.

The Department of Transportation says construction crews remain hard at work to finalize completion of Exit 97 (Broad River Rd) and Exit 91 (Columbia Ave).

  • Widened I-26 from Exit 85 to Exit 97 from 4 lanes to 6 lanes
  • Widened I-26 from Exit 97 to Exit 101 from 4 lanes to 8 lanes

Also, SCDOT says the Midlands Connection project will improve a 16-mile segment of Interstate 26 roadway system that stretches from Exit 85 in Little Mountain to Exit 101 in Irmo.

The project will widen the I-26 roadway, modify three interchanges and replace seven overpass bridges.

The project is part of SCDOT’s Strategic 10-Year Plan.

Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell says, “I am excited that SCDOT can share this good news ahead of holiday travels. Our team has worked hard to get these lanes open so that the public has an easier time traveling through the Midlands. This project is just one example of the progress Team SCDOT is making throughout the state.”
