Man arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting victim, say deputies

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A man has been with criminal sexual conduct, and incest after a person was allegedly sexually assaulted by a relative nearly six months ago, say Sumter County deputies.
Bobby James Witherspoon, 35, was located and extradited to Sumter County to be charged with incest and criminal sexual conduct in the first degree.
Sumter County deputies say the case began in the early hours of Sunday, June 23, 2024, when Sumter County Dispatch received the report of a victim of a sexual crime who was receiving medical care at a hospital.
After evaluating the evidence submitted by investigators, a judge concluded there was enough evidence to sign a warrant for the arrest of Witherspoon.
On Monday, December 16, deputies with the Berkley County Sheriff’s Office performed a traffic stop and found that Witherspoon had warrants from Sumter County.
Investigators with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office were notified and drove to Berkley County, where deputies extradited Witherspoon, according to the sheriff’s office.
Witherspoon was placed under arrested and taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
He met his $20,000 bond requirement and was released.
