IRS tax season begins Monday

(CNN)– The start of tax filing season is less than a week away.

The IRS will begin accepting 2024 federal tax returns on Monday, Jan. 28.

The deadline to file will be April 15.

The agency’s direct file program will also be open in 25 states.

It allows eligible tax filers to file their taxes directly with the IRS for free.

This year, some filers may also get a separate check from the IRS in the next several weeks.

The agency is sending money to 1 million people who were eligible for the 2021 recovery rebate credit and did not claim it on their taxes that year.
