Union membership fell in 2024

(CNN)– Union membership hit new lows in 2024.

According to the Labor Department, more than 14 million American workers were in unions last year.

The share of workers in unions dropped to 9.9%, slightly less than the year prior.

The private sector lost about 184,000 members, while the public sector gained about 15,000 members.

New York and Hawaii had the highest union membership rates.

North Carolina, South Carolina, and South Dakota had the lowest.
