S.C. Office of the State Treasurer celebrates National Unclaimed Property Day
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– In observance of National Unclaimed Property Day on Saturday, Feb. 1, State Treasurer Curtis Loftis announced Friday that more than 800,000 new properties have been reported to the State’s Unclaimed Property Program.
Each year millions of dollars are sent to the State Treasurers’ Office from across the country by companies and entities that cannot locate the rightful owners.
Officials say the State Treasurer’s Office has more than $950 million in unclaimed property for individuals, businesses and organizations across the state.
“Approximately 1 in 7 Americans have unclaimed property, and I am reminding South Carolinians to check their names to see if any of these new properties belong to them. It’s our job to return those funds to the rightful owners, which include individuals, businesses, charities, schools and other organizations. It’s easy to check our website to see if we have funds waiting for you,” explains Treasurer Loftis.
