Sumter, SC (WOLO) — The Sumter Police Department is asking residents to be aware of a scam circulating. Officials say they have received reports of individuals and businesses being singled out by scam artists claiming to be from a utility company. According to authorities, the victims are contacted by phone and told they have an outstanding balance. In order to pay the bill, the scammers tell the victim they will need to pay that balance by uploading money using the Walmart Money Center.

Police say the victims are then provided with a barcode, similar to the one pictured above and told to load a certain amount of money into the account they claim is tied to the barcode.

Authorities remind citizens that utility companies, and other service providers will never asking for payment this way.   Police say if you happen to get a call like this and have concerns you should contact your local authorities.
