RCSD: 2 mothers arrested after fatal Miles Bowman Road shooting
RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Sheriff Leon Lott announces that two mothers have been arrested in connection with their children’s alleged criminal activity.
Richland County Sheriff’s Department says Ashley Layne and Leigha Ricks were arrested in connection to a shooting that happened in the 1000 block of Miles Bowman Road on Jan. 28.
Both women’s sons are accused of being involved in a shooting where a 23-year-old man was found dead in the front passenger seat of a vehicle and a woman was found outside the vehicle with a gunshot wound in the upper body area.
“It’s a sad thing to stand here and say we arresting moms, but these moms are not doing what a mother should do, and teach their children that you must take responsibility for your actions and actions have consequences,” says Sheriff Leon Lott.
During the course of the investigation it was revealed that Ashley Layne who is the mother of Jackson Layne picked him and another person accused of being involved at the shooting location.
Layne is also accused of taking them to her home without alerting law enforcement.
She was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and arrested on Monday, February 10, before being booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Jackson Layne was previously charged with murder.
Additionally, the investigation revealed that Leigha Ricks who is the mother of a 16-year-old that is accused of being involved in the shooting, was contacted numerous times and told about the shooting that happened and her son’s involvement prior to being contacted by law enforcement, says law enforcement.
Ricks is accused of telling her son to stay away from her home, and even told him that deputies were searching for him.
Deputies say when she was confronted by law enforcement, she told deputies she had no knowledge of the shooting.
She was arrested on Monday, February 10, charged with obstruction, and booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention center. Her son was previously charged with murder.
Sheriff Lott continues, “It’s even more troubling that in each of these cases there are no dads in the family. They too have to take responsibility for their children.”
