Lugoff -Elgin H.S. student arrested accused of bringing gun on school property
Kershaw Co., SC. (WOLO) — The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a high school student accused of carrying a firearm on school property. According to deputies, just before 12 noon Tuesday a patrol deputy watched a driver drive through a stop sign at the intersection of Richardson Boulevard and Wildwood Lane in Lugoff.
Authorities say the driver of the car, identified at 18 year old Taylor Weston pulled the car into a back parking lot of the Lugoff-Elgin High School where he parked. When deputies approached the vehicle they reported smelling a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car. Although authorities say Weston told the deputy he was going to be late getting to his next class at 12:04pm, they still conducted a search of the car.
During that search deputies say they discovered an unsecured, loaded gun under the driver’s seat as well as THC Vapes in the center console and driver’s side door. Officials say they have not obtained any information leading them to believe Weston intended to take the loaded weapon out of his car.
“At this time, we have no reason to believe Weston had any intentions to harm anyone with the firearm. However, my office and the Kershaw County School District will maintain our ‘zero tolerance’ policy when it comes to firearms being unlawfully possessed on school grounds in Kershaw County.”
