$1 billion in unclaimed 2021 tax refunds

(CNN)– The IRS says upwards to a billion dollars in refunds for tax year 2021 remain unclaimed, and the deadline to claim them is right around the corner.

According to the agency’s website, more than 1.1 million taxpayers across the U.S. have unclaimed refunds from 2021.

The deadline to submit tax returns is April 15.

The IRS says the median refund amount is an estimated $781 for 2021.

By law, taxpayers usually have three years to file and claim their tax refunds.
