CPD patrol officer accused of assault, misconduct in office is arrested

Columbia, SC (WOLO) — The Columbia Police Department has announced the arrest and termination of one of its patrol officers.

According to the Columbia Police Chief, 26 year old Caleb Payne was taking a women with a warrant into custody Holbrook says Payne is accused of propositioning a woman for sex. Holbrook says the drive from CPD Headquarters to the Alvin S Glenn Detention Center takes roughly 19 minutes, but during an investigation with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) it was determined that the trip ended up taking Payne 41 minutes.

Holbrook says instead of driving the woman straight to the detention center Payne deactivated his in car and body cameras and inappropriately touched the victim.

Payne is being charged with Assault in the Second Degree and Misconduct in Office.
