(CNN)– Car thefts in the U.S. fell 17% last year, marking the largest decline in 40 years.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau says close to 851,000 cars were stolen nationwide in 2024.

That’s a significant drop from the previous year which recorded more than a million thefts.

And it turns around a four-year trend of rising numbers.

NICB officials say the decrease is thanks to the hard work of law enforcement, auto theft task forces and car makers.
