Judge orders man in Horry Co. cross-burning incident ‘to not maintain a nuisance’

A judge gave a new order to the man involved in the cross-burning incident on Monday.

Worden Butler was taken into custody in November 2023 after Butler and Alexis Hartnett put up a cross that faced the victims’ home and proceeded to burn the cross, according to the report.

The judge ordered Butler “to not maintain a nuisance anywhere in South Carolina,” according to Tonya Root with the Horry County Solicitor’s Office.

This ruling came after a temporary injunction in September 2024.

In September, the judge placed a temporary injunction on Butler’s home after 15th Circuit Solicitor Jimmy Richardson asked the Horry County Court to declare the home a public nuisance.

Root said there were no new restrictions added to the case.
