1 person arrested in connection with Congaree Church Road murder

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– One person has been arrested in connection with a Congaree Church Road murder, say deputies.

Richland County Sheriff’s Department says Paul Williams was arrested and detained on Wednesday, April 16, after a shooting in the 800 block of Congaree Church Road.

Around 8 p.m. deputies responded to the area for a report of a stolen lottery ticket where a dispute was happening.

When deputies arrived to the scene, a gunshot was heard.

And Williams was seen by deputies leaving from the backyard with a firearm in his hand.

He was detained, and a victim was found in the backyard with a gunshot wound in the upper body area.

The victim was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, says RCSD.

According to Coroner Rutherford, the victim was identified as Matthew A. Flemming, 67, of Columbia.

Investigators charged Williams with murder, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent offense, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

He is currently at the Alvin S Glenn Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
