ACLU files lawsuit on behalf of USC student

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– A fourth-year doctoral student at the University of South Carolina is facing possible arrest and deportation after his student visa was unexpectedly ended.

The state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union filed an emergency lawsuit last Friday to prevent Matthew Ariwoola’s deportation.

It claims Ariwoola’s legal status was stripped by the federal government without explanation or due process.

Ariwoola had been teaching four chemistry courses at the school and is set to graduate in December.

He is among hundreds of international students from around the country facing sudden deportation by the Department of Homeland Security.
