Retail sales slowed down in April

(CNN)– Americans are keeping a closer watch on their wallets.

The monthly rise in spending at U.S. stores slowed to a tenth-of-a-percent in April which is half of what many economists had predicted, according to a poll from Fact Set.

And a collection of surveys finds consumer sentiment is crumbling largely due to the Trump Administration’s on-again, off-again tariffs on other countries.

Analysts say a sprint by shoppers to buy products ahead of the tariffs appears to have ended and that retail sales could be heading toward a slump.
